Overview

Firewood consumption is the driving force behind the rampant deforestation in Kenya and East Africa. Creating alternatives to firewood, particularly for large-scale users, is a key part of the solution.

Vuma Biofuels is an agricultural waste-to-energy approach developed for large-scale industrial users. The clean biomass energy briquettes made from discarded sugarcane husks, are largely used as thermal energy for steam generation in industrial biomass boilers. The briquettes have greater total calorific content and burn longer and cleaner than regular wood fuel.

Each ton of VumaBriqs is equivalent to 25 trees worth of wood fuel. Vuma aims to save two million trees in Kenya by 2024 and create hundreds of jobs in the process.

Both Aaron and Ian are deeply committed to the company’s impact mission, are seasoned entrepreneurs, and experts in the biomass industry. We’re looking forward to working with them and the rest of the team over the coming years to scale this waste to value innovation.
