One third of the food produced in South Africa, 10 million tonnes, is wasted annually and the majority of it ends up in landfills.

Ywaste, a local circular economy champion, collects organic waste and turn it into high-quality compost.

Based in Philippi, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town, Ywaste employs people from the local community, thereby striving to improve the quality of life for marginalised South Africans.

Our engagement

We invested in Ywaste in August 2021 as new legislation came into place, shortly forcing supermarkets, restaurants etc. to verify that no more than 50% of their organic waste goes to landfills. By 2028, that number will increase to 100%. We’re excited to partner with Ywaste at this opportune time.
